I wrote a blog post on what a backlink is. Should give you a good overview, what to look for and more importantly what to avoid, such as backlink building services that promise 10,000 links. You will end up on useless sites that might actually hurt you more than help. Google is smart enough to know that 10,000 links all of a sudden is not natural and therefore can be discounted.

One of the courses I follow said to submit my website to directories for getting ranked in google, I use ineedhits services because they are experts and do it for a good price and I don’t know how to do it, so is submitting to directories and Link building the same thing or not.

Some paid directories maintaining hogh standards also can be useful for backlinking, depending on the page rank and number of other ads on the page you end up on, these have been recommended by SEO experts (pr is Google page rank for their home page):

The Yahoo directory has an annual review fee if $299 that doesn’t guarantee inclusion. Probably not as valuable as in the past, it’s still worthwhile for enterprise sites with big budgets.

The link juice theory suggests that the benefit of a directory page or blog post comment is divided among the links on the page, a page with 100 outgoing links only provides 1% of the link juice to each of the sites.

Does anyone know of any free link listing websites…where I can submit my websites and company details for seo and advertisement. I have tried to register my website in DMOZ last year and it is still not approved. I have also tried post my website to some other big link directories and they are all pending for months looks like they manually approve them and they are heavily backlogged. Some other link listing websites are not free I have to pay to be listed. Anyone answers ?

I can’t say which is ‘best’, but I can say that none of it is any good. Links from directories like at at worthless – they don’t get visitors so you don’t get direct traffic from them, and search engines don’t like link farms, so you don’t get boosted up the search ranks with them.
